Trees & Site Planning

Over the last 14 years we have been involved as arboricultural consultants on development projects of every size and kind throughout Ireland, from single small new private house builds, to public heritage sites and regional infrastructure projects.

Existing trees can be amongst the most significant long-term features on a site, and can be a visual and environmental asset of immense value to a site proposed for residential, commercial or public development. Sustainable development of a site with tree cover requires an accurate professional survey of what's there, followed by a knowledgeable assessment of how the best trees on site can be retained (conserved).

Mature trees not only give a unique sense of character, maturity and visual screening to a site, but also offer proven environmental benefits such as significant reduction in storm water run off (flooding), carbon sequestration, improved air quality, reduced heating costs, etc. The benefits of one large mature tree can often not be replaced by planting even a 100 new trees.

Modern construction work threatens the survival of any trees on a site. Successful retention (conservation) of trees during site development is possible with the input and advice of a qualified and experienced arboricultural consultant, working with the architects and engineers of the design team, together with informed and committed local planners.

Over the last 12 years, we have been at the forefront of arboricultural consultancy in planning, providing a prompt, professional service of the very highest quality for development projects. All informed local planning authorities in Ireland now require a tree survey and report by a qualified arboriculturist to be submitted as part of a planning application. The applicable standard in Ireland regarding trees and development is BS 5837 (2005).
