Tree Safety & Health

Tree management consists of two things: inspection,  followed (where necessary) by remedial work (e.g. 'tree surgery'). For trees that are important (because of their size, value and location) a knowledgeable inspection needs to be conducted first; otherwise, how do we know what management work is most appropriate?; perhaps no work is really needed!

Larger, mature trees offer irreplaceable benefits. But they can occasionally fail (break or collapse) and result in damage, injury or even fatality, for which the landowner is normally responsible. Having your important trees (e.g. those beside public or occupied  areas) regularly inspected by a competent person can be essential to fulfil your legal duty of care.

Many offer their opinions on whether trees are 'dangerous' and are quick to recommend work. In reality, there are very few people in Ireland properly and professionally qualified (and experienced) in the assessment of the structural safety and physiological health of specimen trees, and in assessing what management work is technically and legally sufficient and appropriate. Please see our FAQ's page for more on this topic.
